Modern Wood Paneled Wall Project – Before & After

The more DIY projects we do the more we love them and want to do more!  As of now we’re renters, and you know how white and sterile rentals can be, right?  Well, since we meet with potential brides, grooms and portrait clients (www.zelophotoblog.com) in our home we want to make the rental as much “ours” as possible…and we’ve heard it can be easier to ask for forgiveness rather than permission, haha!
We really liked the look of a wood paneled wall so we decided to make that a project we’d tackle.  Not the stuffy cheesy wood panels like in Napoleon Dynamite (although perfectly appropriate in that movie):

.
.
So we started by taking down one of our portfolio canvases and painting over the 2-tone blue stenciled wall we were rockin’ before.  After we painted over the blue we started taking measurements so we could build some simple framework to attach to the wall, to which we would then attach the horizontal slats.  Here are a few pics of that progress:

After we had all the horizontal slats mounted we chose MinWax Special Walnut stain and rubbed on 1 coat using a rag.  We also stained and mounted trim moulding around the whole thing to clean up the edges.  When all was said and done we got the look we wanted and here it is!

Finally, when we completed this project we submitted it to Kate over at Design*Sponge and it was accepted to be featured, woohoo!!  You can also jump out to the Design*Sponge site and see the feature here.  Thanks for stopping by our blog!

That looks amazing! And the owners might (hopefully) love it so much, they thank you!

Very cool. Now just do the whole house like that–ceiling to floor!

What kind of wood did you use for the slats? This is a great idea!

Glad you like it! The slats are just pine trim molding. Since we’re just renters for now, it was thin and lightweight and will be easy and mess-free to remove when we move out some day. Maybe some day I’ll do it again with better wood if I’d like more “permanence” :)

Hi Beca! Minwax Special Walnut was the go-to choice for us! :)
